Materials:
*White Fabrics– 1/4 yard
*Orange Scrap Fabrics (see sizes below in Cutting Instructions)

Cutting Instructions:
  • 5 White Squares measuring 3.5″(This will make 8 HST but I wanted a scrappy look so I used 4 different oranges)
  • 4 Orange Squares measuring 3.5″ (for HST's)
  • 8 Orange Squares measuring 3″ (for Pumpkin Body)
  • 1 Green Square 3.5″ (For the green HST)
  • 1 Green Rectangle 2.5″ by 3″ (for the Bow in Row 1)
  • 2 White Rectangles 2.0" by 3″ (for the Bow in Row 1).  Note from Ann. The pattern had a math error, and originally said to cut 1.75 wide.  It should be 2.0 by 3 "to get the right width. Updated here 9/19/25.

Instructions:
Note: Use 1/4 inch seam allowance for all.
Step 1
:
  • Make 4 Half-Square-Triangle (HST) Blocks from the orange and white fabrics.  Press seams open to reduce bulk.
  • Make 2 Green and White Half-Square Triangles (HST) from the remaining white and green fabrics.
  • Trim HST blocks to 3 inches square..  (see example below).

Step 2: After you have made your HST blocks (4 orange and white, 2 green and white) you are ready to assemble the quilt block.  Follow the diagram below to lay out the 4 rows of the quilt block.
  • Row #1: one 1.75″ rectangle, 1 HST green/white, 1 green 2.5 by 3 , 1 HST green/white and one 1.75″ rectangle
  • Row #2: 1 HST orange/white, 2 orange squares(3″), 1 HST orange/white
  • Row #3: 4 orange squares (3″)
  • Row #4: 1 HST orange/white, 2 orange squares(3″), 1 HST orange/white

Step 3: Using a 1/4″ seam allowance and starting with row 1, sew all small rectangles together to form row 1.  Press the seams open or toward the first block.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 with each of the three remaining rows, pressing your quilt squares open or in opposite directions.
Step 5: Next sew all four rows together either pressing seams open or nesting all your seams and press well.  Trim quilt block if needed. Block should be 10-1/2 inches square, and finish at 10 inches once sewn into a quilt.
And you are done!

I love half square triangles so this pattern is just right for me!
