Flashback: Quick & Easy Holiday Project

As the video by Missouri Star Quilt Company points out, it is never too early to start planning for the holidays!  This quilt block is quick and easy and makes a wonderful holiday quilt, table runner, placemats, etc.  We shared this last year in our Block Lotto program, but love it so much that we are sharing it with everyone on our Blog page.
I noted down the fabric measurements for you here (all are in the video too)
  • (4) 5 inch blocks for the present body.  They should all be the same fabric
  • Cut 1.5 inch strips for the Ribbon.  Cut (2) 5 inch x 1.5 inch, and cut (1) 10.5 x 1.5 inch.
  • For the Bow:  Cut (2) 2.5 inch squares in the ribbon fabric.  In the white background fabric Cut (1) 4.5 inch x 2.5 inch and  Cut (2) 3.5 inch x 2.5 inch.  This makes the bow and the top sashing in one step.
  • For the sashing, use background fabric and cut (2) 12.25 inches x 2.5 inches.  Put sashing on the side and the bottom.  There will be sashing on 3 sides and the blocks can be sewn together with a final sashing at the end (see video)

Use Quarter Stars for a Holiday Quilt

9/22/2025

Our members have used the video below to learn how to make Quarter Stars.  Instead of making 4 Quarter Stars to make a complete star, how about positioning them for a Holiday design like I did!  Using my photos and a chart gives you enough information to follow me and make one just like mine.  You can of course just go off the rails and make any design you dream of.

If you use the video and cut 3.5 inch squares, and cut 4.0 inch sqares to make the Half Square Triangles, you quilt will be 36" by 36".  I added a 4.5 inch border but you can choose what size you prefer.
If you want a 24 x 24 inch project before borders, cut 2.5 inch squares and cut 3.0 inch squares for the Half Square Triangles.

This was originally posted on this blog in November 2023.  Since the holidays are rapidly approaching, I thought it might be good to share it again.

These caught my eye as something cute, easy to make and quick to make.  The video includes instructions for making both pillow, with an explanation on an easy back for the pillow so you can easily change your pillow cases when you want. The free instructional video and patterns are from Riley Blake Fabrics.

Our Members meet "out in the wild"

Even though we are an all-online quilt group, sometimes our members get to meet each other in-person (or out in the wild!).  One of our members, Diane (Seattle) came to a quilt retreat in Santa Rosa, and was able to meet a few members in person. These members are regulars at our Zoom meetings. What fun!
