I really liked this quilt by Yoan Sewing Studio on You Tube.  I have some Layer Cakes that I wasn't sure what to do with, so decided that one of them could be make into this quilt.  So, of course I am also sharing it here for others that may want to make it.

Quilt Tip: How to make a quilt with your orphan blocks

8/8/2022

It is amazing how many orphan blocks that can accumulate.  This video shared a process to put a mixture of blocks together to create an attractive quilt.  She finishes the quilt top with a blanket style with a furry type back because that is what her family likes, but the top is attractive enough to add a traditional back and binding and be proud of it that way too.  Enjoy!

Member Sharing - What is your favorite quilt ruler?

At our 2:00 Zoom meeting today, instead of sharing a video with a quilt tip, we asked members to share their favorite quilt ruler.  Lots of fun and we all learned something new from each other.  Thank you to all our members that participated! Here are some of the results:

Gina S:
  • Bloc Loc ruler, she prefers the 6 inch size, easier to handle. She uses it for trimming  half-square triangle since it "locks" on the diagonal seam.
  • Fiskars revolving cutting mat.  She doesn't actually rotate it when using it, but likes it because it works well on the firm surface like her ironing board.
Mary Ann H.
  • She likes Quilters Select rulers.  They don't slide on the fabric.  They are frosted but can still see clearly through them.
  • Tape for her sewing machine bed.  Center Line.  The removable tape has a center line to align with the needle, and then 1/4 inch lines on either side. Using the tape as a guide, she can stitch the diagonal line on half-square lines without having to mark them on the fabric.
  • June Taylor brand strip cutting ruler. It has 1/4 inch markings so can cut 1-1/4 inch strips, which is really useful for her.
Tomi S
  • She likes the Creative Grids cutting rulers. It has little grip areas on the back so they don't slide.  Her favorite is the 8-1/2 inch by 24 inch ruler. There are lots of measurements on the ruler, so you need to be careful to use the right lines when cutting.
Evelyn R
  • She likes the Creative Grids cutting rulers.  Her most used is the 45 degree triangle, the kaleidoscope, and the Dresden Plate ruler.
Linda V
  • Linda likes to use French curve rulers, useful for free form curves on art quilts.  They have a 1/4 inch marking on them that makes adding a seam allowance easier on curves. Her favorite is the SA curve mini.
Justine L
  • She likes Creative Grids cutting rulers. Her favorite ruler is the Stripology Strip Cutter XL.
Marilyn D
  • She likes the "Taj" machine quilting ruler designed by Angela Walters. Using this ruler creates a nice leafy meander, and designs for borders.  She says it helped her get into Free Motion Quilting.  The ruler includes a You Tube video to learn designs and a Tip Sheet is also available.
Christy D
  • She likes the Flying Geese and Half Square Triangle cutting rulers from Creative Grids.  It is 6-1/2 inches by 2-1/2 inches.

This entire quilt was ruler quilted with these 3 rulers.  25 New York beauties!
Rhonda’s mini arc is my all time fave.  I got it @ Quilter’s rule online, which is where I got the nesting circles.  The little straight edge is not a quilting ruler as it’s not wide width but I managed to not break a needle when I used it.   It’s from Creative Grids.
