Hunter Star pattern using a Layer Cake

Keep on Track with Stippling Free Motion

This was posted as a comment by someone. I thought it was a very useful tip and wanted to share it here. The blue line is her marking on the fabric of the "path" for her to follow as a general guide. The red is her quilting/stippling. By having the path determined ahead of time, it helps you know your way and not get stuck in a corner. With one less thing to think about, it can be much easier to do and it looks better too. Give it a try!

Make Scrappy 4 inch Star Quilt Blocks

I can think of lots of uses for these tiny scrappy stars. It would be fun to figure them out in other sizes too. Just keep making them!

Instructions included with the video:
Let’s make scrappy little 4” stars. You’ll need these patches:

Background, 4 rectangles 1.5 x 2.5, 4 squares 1.5 x 1.5.
Star points, 8 squares 1.5 x 1.5.
Center, 1 square 2.5 x 2.5.
Use stitch-and-flip to make 4 Flying Geese for the star points as shown, using your fingernail to press.
Sew 2 of these to opposite sides of the center square. Press seam allowances IN.
To the other 2 Flying Geese, sew a background square to each end as shown. Press seam allowances OUT.
Sew the three sections together to complete the star. It should be 4.5” including seam allowances. It will be 4” when sewn into the quilt top.
There are many variations: just two fabrics, star points scrappy, backgrounds scrappy, light background, dark background, whatever you can dream up. Beautiful quilt photo was posted in our Private Facebook Group by one of our members, Tomi. Unfortunately, the link went to an internet page with lots of ads and spam. So pretty that I did a little sleuthing and found the original post and a free download for the instructions. So a happy ending after all, and now we have this to share to our members. The pattern download mentioned a video that was perfect for making multiple flying geese. It was still available and it is a very interesting way to make them. An old Fons & Porter video, of course. Below is the video, and well worth watching.
