I made a quilt for my son and his wife. He asked “So ‘Mom, what does a quilt like this cost to make? Fifty to a hundred?”
I told him, “The fabric and materials alone would be about $250, then it took me about 80-100 hours to make it. How much do you make a week at ___?”
“Oh…”
That was maybe 7-8 yeas ago. I’ve done this for 65+ years. I also have a lumberyard. No way do I have the physical labor a carpenter does, but as you say, even others make more according to their skill level and number of years they’ve worked. $20/hour is not unreasonable. Especially in today’s labor market. But I realize that like anything else, it’s worth what others are willing to pay. If you want slave labor, you need to go buy off places that use that. Think about what we are promoting when you can just “go to the box store and buy it for $X.” You get what you pay for.
